Ghastly Images – Sketching with Photoshop
Let’s start with the scratches.
Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to roughly select the area around the subject. Cut it out (from the ‘white’ layer) and past it back in place, on its own layer.

Set this newly pasted layer to 90% opacity.

Grab the Eraser tool. Set it to 1px with a low opacity. Proceed to scribble away at the ‘white’ layer.

This should erase parts of the layer covering the background, allowing some of it to show through.
If you want an additional layer of white scratches, that’s easily done as well. Create a new layer (‘white scratches’), set your Pencil Tool to 1px, and start scribbling!

Once finished with both layers of scratches, you may want to highlight a particular area of your photo, allowing the background to show through. Grab a large, soft Eraser, and get rid of some of the ‘scratches’ layer.

Adding more colour to this photo is really easy to do. I decided on a gentle gradient for the background. Select the ‘white’ layer, and add a Gradient Overlay.

You may also decide to change the colour of the sketch lines. Try adding a Gradient or Colour Overlay to the ‘lines’ layer as well to produce some psychedelic effects.

And there you have it, a neat hand-made sketch effect of your favourite picture.

I definitely encourage you to play around with this. Try different thickness of lines, different subjects, different background colours, etc. And be sure to comment below to let me see what you came up with!

Cool tutorial. Thanks!
What a great idea !! I’ve been using the trace contour filter in photoshop, rendering it to greyscale and then cleaning it up. This is a much better technique. Thanks !!
