ReflectionnoitcelfeR – How to automate your work by using Photoshop Actions
This part is a little tricky and counterintuitive, but bear with me. What we need to do is to create a clipping mask that will allow a gradiential transparency for the reflection. We can’t simply drag one down from the middle to the bottom of the image, since not all images will be the same height. So, we need to shrink the canvas down to just the reflection, apply the gradient to that, then blow it back up again.
Enter Canvas size. Use the following:

Selecting the flipped layer, add in your layer mask.

Prepare your white-black gradient, making sure linear is checked.

And create your gradient. The gradient I’ve created works well with smaller pictures – however when applying this action to larger photos the reflection may seem very small. It is THIS STEP that you would adjust for larger photographs – make the gradient further down!

Adjust the opacity of this layer as well to your choosing. Although I’ve used 20% in this tutorial, something much higher works well too – 60% is good.

Now we have to rescue the top! Enter canvas size and retrieve your original image.

Here is your image, complete with a reflection.

Hit the ‘Stop’ button on the Actions palette to stop recording. You’re done! Now it’s time to test out your action on other images – try it! Pop and image into photoshop, then simply select your Action and hit ‘Play’.

That’s it! If you want to download the action to take a look at it yourself, come on over!

Hello, its me again
I was just wondering , when you download the ‘action’ file.
How do you use it exactly?
Hey Gregor! Yeah, sorry for not making that clear. First make sure your actions palette is open (Alt-F9). In the top right hand corner, there should be a little button there – click it and a dropdown menu should appear. Select ‘Load Actions’, then point it to the .atn file. Hope that helps!
Then what do you do?
Do you open a new document or what?
Ah, I see what you’re getting at. You can use it for a variety of things – try creating a small-ish canvas with some text on it. Make sure the text touches the edge of the canvas, at least on the bottom. Rasterize the text layer, then open up your actions. Open the Reflection folder, select ‘reflect’ and hit play – that should work!
Why don’t you try it out with this image? (Don’t save it to your computer, just copy it and paste it into a photoshop canvas)

Ok I will try it.
Oh, it’s not working, I will just follow the tutorial.
Thanks though.
Weird, sorry it’s giving you trouble. :// You could also try flattening the whole image before you work on it (Layer — Flatten Image), and then apply the action. Let me know if you had other questions!
